Chiefs trade Tyreek Hill to Dolphins for five draft picks, including a 2022 first-rounder

Another day, another big name on the move in the NFL. After failed efforts to strike a new contract with Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs have traded the All-Pro wide receiver to the Dolphins, as ESPN and NFL Media reported and CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora confirmed Wednesday. Earlier in the day, Kansas City granted the six-time Pro Bowler permission to seek a trade and began exploring potential replacements at his position. The Jets were reportedly also front-runners to land Hill, but instead, the speedster will go to Miami in exchange for five different draft picks, including a 2022 first-rounder.

Hill, 28, was set to enter a contract year with the Chiefs, the final year of a three-year, $54 million extension he signed in 2019. He was seeking a substantial raise in the wake of 2022 free agency, which reset the receiver market thanks to a number of new deals around the NFL. Kansas City offered the former Super Bowl champion an extension that would’ve made him one of the game’s highest-paid at his position, per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, but negotiations stalled to the point Hill sought a new deal elsewhere.

The Dolphins, in addition to giving Hill a four-year, $120 million extension that averages $30 million per year, with $72.2M guaranteed — a new record for wide receivers, have dealt a 2022 first-round pick, 2022 second-rounder, 2022 fourth-rounder, 2023 fourth-rounder and 2023 sixth-rounder to Kansas City in exchange for the wideout.

NFL free agency 2022: Davante Adams franchise tag dynamics, plus chances of a Packers trade or long-term deal

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst referred to using a franchise tag on Davante Adams as a last resort last week when meeting with the local Green Bay media. The All-Pro wide receiver is exactly the type of player that typically gets franchised, although the last time the Packers used the designation was in 2010 on defensive tackle Ryan Pickett.

Adams is the NFL’s most productive wide receiver since signing his expiring four-year contract extension at the end of the 2017 season. He leads the NFL in receptions (432), receiving yards (5,310) and touchdown catches (47) during this span. Adams set the Packers single season record for receiving yardage with 1,553 yards in 2021. He also had 123 catches to break his own team record along with 11 receiving touchdowns.

The Packers have less than a week to avoid the last resort scenario. The deadline for NFL teams to designate a franchise player is 4 p.m. ET on March 8. Gutekunst indicated there’s been “constant communication” with Adams and his representatives during his media session on Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

The Packers already have a challenging salary cap situation without a $20.12 million franchise tag for Adams. After entering the offseason approximately $50 million over the projected $208.2 million 2022 salary cap, the Packers have started decreasing the overage by restructuring multiple contracts (tackle David Bakhtiari, defensive tackle Kenny Clark, running back Aaron Jones). The overage doesn’t factor in Adams’ franchise tag. The $20.12 million would become a Green Bay salary cap charge as soon as the designation is made.

It sounds as though the Philadelphia 76ers may not have to wait until the offseason to trade disgruntled star Ben Simmons after all. Recent reports suggested that the Sixers wanted to wait until more star players were available this summer before exploring a trade centered around Simmons, but The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported on Friday that the Brooklyn Nets are open to discussing a trade ahead of the deadline where James Harden would be sent to Philly in exchange for Simmons.

This is a reverse from recent reports suggesting that Brooklyn did not plan on listening to any trade offers for Harden leading up to the deadline. But according to Charania, there’s a sense of urgency within the Nets’ organization this season, as they view it as a “critical year in Kevin Durant’s prime.” This report comes at a time when the Nets aren’t playing their best basketball. Durant is currently sidelined with a sprained MCL, and during that time Brooklyn has gone just 2-7 and is currently on a six-game losing streak.

The Nets view a potential Simmons-for-Harden swap as an opportunity to get Brooklyn more depth, with Seth Curry, Tyrese Maxey and Matisse Thybulle all being potential add-ons to the deal. However, the Sixers reportedly would not include Maxey in a deal for Harden, per CBS Sports’ Michael Kaskey-Blomain. Philadelphia has been resistant in the past to trade Maxey, most recently when the team looked to acquire Harden originally from the Rockets. But with Joel Embiid playing at an MVP-level again, and the Sixers climbing up to the No. 3 spot in the Eastern Conference with a 31-20 record, Philadelphia clearly wants to take advantage of this season and almost certainly will be a piece that the Nets ask for in any return for Harden.

Rockets open to Russell Westbrook for John Wall trade, but for a heavy price, per report

The Los Angeles Lakers would probably love a do-over on the Russell Westbrook trade right about now. They are a disappointing 22-23 through 45 games due in large part to Westbrook’s disappointing season, and on Wednesday, he was benched for the final 3:52 of their loss to the Indiana Pacers. With the trade deadline approaching, the Lakers would happily listen to offers for their declining point guard, but very few teams even have the necessary matching salary to make a deal feasible. Fewer would be interested in acquiring a 33-year-old with declining athleticism and no 3-point shot.

But there is one team that is open to acquiring Westbrook, according to Marc Stein, and it’s a team he’s pretty familiar with: the Houston Rockets. The Rockets are uniquely positioned to make a Westbrook trade because they employ a player that was already traded for Westbrook once before: John Wall. Wall and Westbrook have identical contracts. Both are making roughly $44 million this season and have player options for roughly $47 million next season. Wall hasn’t played at all for Houston this season, so it’s not as though Houston would be losing much in swapping him for Westbrook. It would, in essence, boil down to trading one veteran they aren’t using for another.

But that doesn’t mean the Rockets are going to do the Lakers any favors. According to Stein, they are seeking a hefty price: the Lakers’ 2027 first-round pick. That is the next available first-round pick the Lakers can trade due to restrictions involving the Stepien Rule and all of the first-rounders they gave away in the Anthony Davis deal. An early look at 2022 NFL trade candidates: Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson among 10 big names who could be dealt

All eyes are on the NFL playoff picture as the 2021 regular season winds down. But a handful of teams are already — if not admittedly, privately — looking forward to the 2022 offseason. And if last winter and spring are any indication, we could be in for yet another flurry of high-profile moves, starting at the quarterback position.

With that in mind, here’s an early look at 10 big names who could very well find themselves on the trade market in 2022:

We’re including him out of necessity, not because anything points to an ugly split between Rodgers and the Packers right now. With a third straight 13-win season and NFC title run very much in the cards, why wouldn’t they work toward an extended marriage, even if it means punting on the Jordan Love succession plan? But let’s say Rodgers still opts to control his own destiny post-2021; the Packers can instantly save $19-plus million — and assuredly collect multiple first-rounders — by sending him elsewhere. They’d absorb a big dead-cap hit ($26.8M) by doing so, but the Eagles and Rams proved in 2021 that massive financial pills can, in fact, be swallowed in the name of drama-free QB situations.

Will Pete Carroll and Co. be eager to reset the QB spot? Not necessarily. But a rebuild could certainly be on the way, and Russ had no qualms about teasing a relocation even before Seattle tumbled to the bottom of the NFC West. Maybe the price tag is slightly lower after his 2021 finger surgery, but he’s still just 33 with plans to play another decade. Seattle would absorb a $26M dead-cap hit by dealing No. 3, but the team would still save a net of $11M, freeing up space for a roster in dire need of reinforcements.

The 2020-21 offseason has begun and, well, nothing’s happened. That isn’t surprising though. The MLB offseason, much like the regular season, is a marathon rather than a sprint. The top free agents typically don’t sign until a few weeks into the winter, and the trade market can be slow to develop when so many free agents are still on the board.

Here are R.J. Anderson’s top 50 free agents. This isn’t a great free agent class, and because of that, teams could venture out into the trade market to address their needs. There are still plenty of rebuilding teams willing to trade their best players for prospects, and contenders making salary dump trades so they can spend elsewhere is possible as well.

With that in mind, here are MLB’s top 20 trade candidates heading into the offseason, ranked in order of how likely they are to be moved and how attractive they are to potential trade suitors.

After losing 110 games this season and 35 games during the shortened 60-game season a year ago, nothing can be off the table for the D-Backs, who don’t exactly seem poised for a quick turnaround in the rugged NL West. Marte is one of the most valuable trade commodities in the game given his play and affordable contract. This is as team friendly as it gets:

2022: $8 million
2023: $10 million club option ($1 million buyout)
2024: $12 million club option ($1.5 million buyout)

That is at most $30 million for Marte’s age 28-30 seasons. An absolute steal. Also, Marte can play center field or second base, though hamstring trouble led the D-Backs to playing him more at second down the stretch.
