Heart healthy eating starts with your habits, statement says

That doesn’t mean giving up takeout or that five-minute meal kit from the grocery store altogether. The dietary guidance encourages people to adapt these habits into their lifestyle.

The statement identifies 10 features of heart-healthy eating patterns — including guidance to combine a balanced diet with exercise; consume most nutrients through food over supplements; eat whole grains; reduce sodium, added sugar and alcohol intake; use non-tropical plant oils; and eat minimally processed, over ultra-processed, foods.

“What’s really important now is that people make modifications that can be sustainable in the long term,” said Alice Lichtenstein, director of Tufts University’s Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory and chair of the writing group for the AHA’s new statement.

The statement’s writing group evaluated literature and devised 10 features of heart-healthy dietary patterns. The group also expanded on the guidance, recognizing the need for sustainability and societal challenges that can be obstacles to achieving proper nutrition.

Lichtenstein said eating behaviors have changed since the AHA last published a statement with dietary guidance 15 years ago. Previously, the main options were to eat out or dine in, but eating habits have been less consistent in recent years. There has been a trend — exacerbated by the pandemic — of more convenience food options, such as delivery, meal kits and premade meals.

Make changes that go the distance

The focus of the AHA’s new guidance, Lichtenstein said, is to do what works for you, whatever dietary restrictions or cultural adaptions you want to make. Lichtenstein discourages people from making drastic changes based on fad diets — instead, sustained efforts in incorporating these healthy habits can be more beneficial in the long run.

AHA News: How Doctors Can Help Their Patients Make Heart-Healthy Lifestyle Changes | Health News

By American Heart Association News, HealthDay Reporter

(HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Nov. 4, 2021 (American Heart Association News) — Lifestyle change is a powerful, proven way for a person to prevent heart disease. But to make healthy changes stick, people often need a little help.

Primary care doctors could offer crucial assistance in connecting patients with counseling that’s been shown to make a difference. But because of time constraints or other barriers, those doctors often don’t.

A new report offers guidance on how to change that.

The scientific statement, published Thursday in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, summarizes research showing the benefits of behavioral counseling. It also offers practical ways for busy health care professionals to help patients get that kind of care – care that goes beyond the typical 15-minute annual appointment.

Deepika Laddu, who led the group that wrote the statement, said it’s not usually enough for a patient to simply recognize the need to change their eating or exercise habits.

“It’s one thing to say, ‘I’m going to reduce the amount of fat in my diet.’ But they need support to say, ‘I’m going to maintain that as a lifestyle,'” said Laddu, an assistant professor of physical therapy in the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Such support might involve guidance on planning a healthy diet or setting realistic exercise goals. It also could involve checking in regularly to make sure those plans and goals stay on track.

But “providers don’t have time,” Laddu said. “They may not have the resources in place. There also are system-related factors,” such as the bureaucracies behind referral policies or reimbursement.

The report spells out the importance of overcoming such barriers by summarizing research on programs delivered in primary care or community settings that have been

Is Tea Good for Blood Pressure Health?

Is Tea Good for Blood Pressure Health?

Hypertension (high blood pressure) means that blood flows through your arteries at higher-than-normal pressure. If left untreated, hypertension can cause complications such as heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

Hypertension affects nearly half of adults in the United States. An estimated 47% of Americans have systolic blood pressure greater than 130 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure greater than 80 mmHg, or are taking medication for hypertension.

What Is Blood Pressure?

Systolic pressure: The pressure when the ventricles pump blood out of the heart

Diastolic pressure: The pressure between heartbeats when the heart is filling with blood

Hypertension is typically treated with heart-healthy lifestyle changes such as a healthy low-sodium diet and regular exercise. Medication to reduce blood pressure may also be needed.

Some people also use supplements and other natural remedies to help manage blood pressure. For instance, research suggests that certain teas, such as black tea and green tea, may help lower blood pressure.

This article will look at the science of how tea affects blood pressure, and how best to get the benefits.

What Are Catechins?

All tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. The level of leaf fermentation determines the type of tea:

  • White: Unfermented young buds
  • Green: Unfermented fully grown leaves
  • Oolong: Partially fermented
  • Black: Fully fermented
  • Pu-erh: Aged and fully fermented

Herbal teas are not considered true teas, because they are made from plants other than the Camellia sinensis plant.

The leaves of Camellia sinensis contain polyphenols that belong to the catechin family. These catechins are:

  • Epicatechin (EC)
  • Epigallocatechin (EGC)
  • Epicatechin gallate (ECG)
  • Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)

These catechins have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants fight free radicals (molecules that cause oxidation from chemical reactions in the body). This helps prevent or delay cell damage and protect against inflammation.

  • Scientists say they believe Alzheimer’s disease may spread differently in the brain than previously thought.
  • They say Alzheimer’s starts in different regions of the brain, rather than spreading from a single area.
  • Experts say the research could lead to better diagnosis as well as new treatments for the disease.

Scientists say they may have discovered that Alzheimer’s disease progresses differently in the brain than previous research suggests.

Researchers from the University of Cambridge in England and Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts report that they believe Alzheimer’s doesn’t begin in a single area of the brain before spreading to other regions.

They say instead that by the time Alzheimer’s starts to grow, it is already present in multiple regions of the brain.

“The thinking had been that Alzheimer’s develops in a way that’s similar to many cancers: The aggregates form in one region and then spread through the brain,” Georg Meisl, PhD, first author of the paper and a researcher from Cambridge’s Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, said in a press release.

“But instead, we found that when Alzheimer’s starts, there are already aggregates in multiple regions of the brain and so trying to stop the spread between regions will do little to slow the disease,” he explained.

The researchers conducted their study using PET scans of those living with Alzheimer’s disease, together with postmortem samples of the brain from people who died with the disease.

They tracked the spread of tau, a type of protein that contributes to Alzheimer’s.

In Alzheimer’s disease, tau and another protein called amyloid-beta form tangles and plaques known as aggregates that cause the brain to shrink.
